Chapter Nine

Jett

“Are we all comfortable with this price?” Jett asked nervously as he stared down at his computer. On the screen before him was a live video conference with his brothers Bennett and Colt and his father. Besides him in a black SUV was his brother Phoenix.

The two of them were outside of their meeting with various lawyers and property owners where they had been discussing the fate of the potential New York ranch.

The meeting went well. While the brothers were warned that the ranch was perhaps not as nice as the photos suggested, it was nothing that a little makeover couldn’t fix.

“It sounds like a steal to me,” Colt said easily. “The pictures look great. Maybe a little bit on the rustic side.”

“Well, it’s a ranch. It’s supposed to be rustic,” Jett said.

“Hey, you know whatever you guys want to do, I’m in,” Bennett agreed. “Looks good and the price is right. I say go for it before they change their minds!”

“Dad?” Jett said.

His father sat with his hand over his chin, thinking. “What does your brother say?” Roger asked.

“It all looks good to me,” Phoenix added.

“Which doesn’t say much, considering you couldn’t care less about ranching,” Colt said with a laugh.

Phoenix frowned and exchanged an irritated glance with Jett. “Maybe not,” he said defensively, “but I still know a good property when I see one and I have more experience signing contracts and making deals with lawyers than all of you put together. Except for you, Dad.”

Their country star brother wasn’t wrong. He’d been touring for years and had been signed to labels, configured advertising deals, and still managed to keep his Utah ranch thriving. The fact that he didn’t care about horses, guest experiences, or life in the country had no impact on his ability to negotiate a deal—and negotiate he did. Jett had managed to wiggle the price down on his own, but once Phoenix was involved, his brother managed to get them down an extra ten-thousand dollars.

Everyone wanted to please the rich and famous, Jett supposed.

“Alright, alright. I think it’s time to take the plunge,” his father said abruptly. “So long as we are all in agreement, I say get up there and sign on the dotted line.”

The brothers agreed, and just like that, the seventh Brookside Ranch was born. Six for each boy in the family and owned by their parents.

Jaxon hadn’t been a part of the business meeting, which disappointed Jett. Jax had told their father that he wasn’t officially a ranch owner and shouldn’t have any say in what was or was not purchased. Jett would have fired back with a “But this is YOUR ranch we’re buying here” but his father was too lenient. Roger knew his youngest son was having a hard time adjusting to the idea of moving away, and he didn’t want to stress him out.

It was funny to see his father go soft as the years went by. When he was a teenager, there was no way
